Fun on the Volleyball Court
50
Everyone played volleyball in gym class at some point or another. You may have even played it through high school up to college. Most adults seem to lose touch with the sports that initially got them moving, but now is the perfect time to rediscover your long-lost hobby.
One of the best things about volleyball is that there are so many different places to play. Most gymnasiums and recreation centers have their own volleyball courts, but you can also find volleyball nets at parks and beaches as well. It’s not uncommon to find a pickup game of volleyball going on at your favorite outdoor location.
The sport revolves around three basic moves: bump, set, and spike. There are two teams of six that compete against one another for point totals. The goal of each team is to prevent the ball from hitting the ground, and there are numerous rules within this framework that shape the game as we know it today.
In professional or organized games, a referee supervises the event and decides on points and fouls. Players wear special uniforms and kneepads so that they can dive to hit the ball. But in backyard volleyball, there are no such rules! It’s up to you and Uncle Harry to fight over who got that last point.
There are many ways to play volleyball, from the light-hearted games to the serious competitions. But either way, it is a hobby that many enjoy and continue to play throughout their adulthood. So what do you think? Game…set…match!
